Left-Back Crisis For Kaizer Chiefs?
Steve Komphela May Have A Tough Choice To Make This Weekend
Steve Komphela may be forced into a tough decision this weekend, with his two top left backs doubtful for the Nedbank Cup clash against SuperSport United.
The Amakhosi currently find themselves on a 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions as they keep their hopes alive of clinching some silverware before the 2016/17 season comes to an end and at present their best hope of doing that will be in the cup.
Chiefs have been drawn against their former coach, Stuart Baxter, for a spot in the semifinals of the tournament and Steve Komphela will be eager to make sure that his side progress into the last four.
However, he may have to change up his team ahead of the encounter, with both Tsepo Masilela and Sibusiso Khumalo battling with injuries ahead of the clash.
The Siya crew has been informed that both defenders are doubtful for the game as they struggle with hip and groin injuries respectively and if neither recovers in time then their head coach may have to look elsewhere.
Masilela or Khumalo have started 22 of Chiefs’ 24 league games so far this season, 11 each and in the two games that they missed, the Glamour Boys lost 3-1 to Chippa United and drew 0-0 against Bloemfontein Celtic.
Komphela will be hoping that at least one of his full-backs can recover in time to face Matsatsantsa on Saturday, but if they don’t then Daniel Cardoso may be called upon to deputise just like he did against Celtic.
The other option for Chiefs’ head coach is to switch formations to three at the back, playing three centre-halves instead of a flat back four.
