Steve Komphela Linked With Kaizer Chiefs Exit
Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has less than a year to run on his current contract and we take a look at the early candidates that are linked to take over his job, should he leave the club.
Click through the images above to see how Steve Komphela’s league record since 2006 compares to the early candidates to take over his job at Kaizer Chiefs.
In Soccer Laduma issue number 1039’s Siya Special, we took a look at the possible reshuffling of Amakhosi’s technical team that could be in the works due to Komphela’s tenure at the club that has seen the club go two seasons without silverware and already eliminated from one competition this season, the MTN8.
Amongst the early candidates linked to taking over the reins from the former Maritzburg United mentor are Ruud Krol, Gavin Hunt, Manqoba Mngqithi, Muhsin Ertugral and Gordon Igesund and we look at how Komphela’s numbers compare to his counterparts.
The former Bafana Bafana mentor has been in the dugout for Free State Stars, Platinum Stars, Maritzburg United and the Glamour Boys over the course of the last 11 years and has sat in the dugout for 258 matches in that time frame, winning 94 of those, drawing 83 and losing 81, accumulating 365 points at an average of 1.41 points per game.
Ruud Krol spent just 90 league games at Orlando Pirates between 2008 and 2011, winning 42 of those, drawing 33 and losing 15, accumulating 159 points at an average of 1.77 points per game. Then Gavin Hunt, who worked with Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits over the course of the last 11 years, took charge of 330 league games, winning 161, drawing 91 and losing 78, meaning that he accumulated 574 points at an average of 1.74 per game.
Manqoba Mngqithi, meanwhile, has not been the head coach of a club since 2014 but was in charge of Golden Arrows, AmaZulu and Chippa United prior to taking over the role as Pitso Mosimane’s assistant at Mamelodi Sundowns. In his seven years as a head coach in the last 11 years, he oversaw 177 matches, winning 50, drawing 59 and losing 68, accumulating 209 points at an average of 1.18 points per game.
Muhsin Ertugral spent time in the Orlando Pirates, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Ajax Cape Town and the Chiefs dugout since 2006, overseeing 168 games, winning 62, drawing 56 and losing 50 on his way to collecting 242 points at an average of 1.44 per game.
Finally, Gordon Igesund, who’s been in charge of Mamelodi Sundowns, Maritzburg United, Free State Stars, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Highlands Park in the period between 2006 and 2017, has accumulated 271 points, having won 70 of his 96 games in the dugout, drawn 61 and lost 65, at an average of 1.38 points per game.
Therefore, the average points tallies might provide an indication as to which of the early candidates should be made a priority for Chiefs or whether Steve Komphela deserves a contract extension, which remains a possibility in the current scenario. However, average points may not tell the full story, with each coach taking charge of different clubs under different circumstances and the numbers alone may flatter to deceive in some cases. The coaches are ranked by average points tallies as follows:
1. Ruud Krol – 1.77 points per game
2. Gavin Hunt – 1.74 points per game
3. Muhsin Ertugral – 1.44 points per game
4. Steve Komphela - 1.41 points per game
5. Gordon Igesund – 1.38 points per game
6. Manqoba Mngqithi – 1.18 points per game
