THE BREAKDOWN: Coetzee Or Tyson – Who Would Be The Best Fit For Pirates?

Rivaldo Coetzee v Thulani Hlatshwayo

By Kyle Smith - Jul 16, 2017 05:00 PM @KyleLaduma

In a follow up to last week’s analysis of Orlando Pirates’ move for Thulani Hlatshwayo, we take a look at whether their latest target, Rivaldo Coetzee can offer more to the club.

THE BREAKDOWN: Can Tyson Fix Pirates’ Defence?

Click through the images above to see the detailed statistics comparing Thulani Hlatshwayo, Rivaldo Coetzee, Ayanda Gcaba and Happy Jele.

In Soccer Laduma issue number 1031, it was revealed that Pirates are looking to join in the race for the signature of one of Mzansi’s hottest properties in the form of the Ajax Cape Town defender. While Coetzee has proven himself to be one of the best defenders in the country, it must also be said that Thulani Hlatshwayo is just as highly regarded and also has an Absa Premiership medal under his belt, as well as the award for the 2016/17 Absa Premiership Defender of the Season. Accolades and praise count for something, but how do they compare on the pitch?

As discussed in last week’s feature, Pirates’ regular defensive pairing last season and their defensive actions (tackles, blocks, clearances), passes, number of balls won and aerial duels are very similar, with Gcaba winning a higher percentage of his ground duels and Jele winning more per 90 minutes– so there’s not a lot to choose between the pair.

Comparing Coetzee with Tyson, as Hlatshwayo is affectionately known, it is the Ajax man that has averaged fewer defensive actions per 90 minutes – however, this is not necessarily a bad thing and could indicate that Coetzee “picks his battles”, so to speak. However, Coetzee competed in fewer duels than his Bafana teammate, but his success rate in aerial duels was superior to all three of the other defenders.

Yet, Coetzee’s most outstanding attribute is undoubtedly his distribution, with the ball-playing central defender making more passes per 90 minutes than any of his counterparts, and with greater accuracy. Furthermore, his long passes were so outstanding that, among players who attempted more than 50 long balls over the course of last season, Coetzee’s 63% success rate ranked 10th in the PSL and well above the 46.6% league average – which was the figure achieved by Hlatshwayo.

Official: The Biggest Confirmed PSL Transfers So Far...

Hlatshwayo is a more destructive defender than Coetzee and has proven his ability to win the ball back, both on the ground and in the air. However, Coetzee has taken on the role of a more cultured defender, showing himself to be one of the best when on the ball, rather than when off it.

Who do you think Pirates should sign?

We badly need them both.and a right back(either de jong from stars or nazeer from wits).then jali in the middle to be paired with sangweni and add steel in our defense!upfront rusike would add much needed blistering pace.then ubaba makola, and one left back sacrificed preferable phungwayo, then jele, nyauza, mpontshane, motupa, sarr, gabuza,Qalinge and Gcaba can be all sold to recoup lost monies in purchasing them.

I would prefer hardworking Mothobi Mvala than both Thulani Hlatswayo and R13m Rivaldo Coetzee. We need a hard worker not just a player who have got it all.
